Africa’s Best Hip-Hop Stars

Africa, a continent that owns diverse music genres and glows with them, has become a giant in the world of hip-hop, raising up stars with different styles that shine universally. In the Best Artist or Group in African hip-hop category in the AFRIMA2017 event, Africans have been given the opportunity to affirm which hip-hop artist raps best, amongst the paramount Hip-hop artists nominated for the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA Awards.

The Best Artiste of Group in African Hip-Hop are:

French Montana 

The remarkable French Montana is a nominee for his song “Unforgettable” featuring Swae Lee. Founder of the Coke Boys Record and the Cocaine City Records, French Montana was born in Rabat, Morocco in Africa and only moved to the United States at the age of 13. This African Artist has exceeded expectations as a signee of a joint venture recording deal with Bad Boy’s Records and MayBach Music Group. He has collaborated with international hip-hop stars like Lil-wayne, Rick-Ross, Drake and much more. His AFRIMA2017 song “Unforgettable” is with no doubt a great track; unveiling French Montana’s love for people.

Big Nelo

Angolan Singer/composer of rap and RnB Legend; Big Nelo is one of the Hip Hop nominees for his song “O Legado Da Lenda”. Being influenced and motivated by western music particularly American rap, the African Hip-hop artist, first ventured into the music sphere with the SSP, a music group he formed in Angola, but took on a solo career in 2005. He currently has to his belt over 25 years of music and several concerts and has made hit tracks with singers and groups like B, O2, Kali Brados, and C4pedro. In “O Legado Da Lenda” Big Nelo reminisces on his journey as a music artist in a most energetic and entertaining way.


Nigerian Hip-hop/Afropop artist Ycee, is also nominated for this highly competitive category. Born in Festac town Lagos, Ycee broke into the music scene after the release of his song “Condo” featuring Patoranking and became even more famous after the release of his single titled “Jagaban” which received massive airplay. His latest hit track “Juice” proves that Ycee is not just a passing chapter but a music artist who has come to stay.


Nominated amongst other big Hip Hop mics is the French hardcore rapper from Morocco, Kaaris, for his die-hard track “Tchoin”. Kaaris began rapping in 1999 and released his first mix tape in 2001. He became a well-known hip-hop figure in 2012 after the release of his Street Album titled “ZERO” and even more so in 2013 after he released his album “Or Noir”. He majors in hardcore rap and has worked with famous music artistes like Niro and Booba. In his nominated song “Tchoin”, he unleashes a befitting flow to an outstanding Hip hop/dance beat.


The international artiste AKA was nominated for his hit single “The World Is Yours.” The Cape Town-born Hip-hop artist and record producer began his life in music in 2002 as a member of a rap group called Entity, in 2009 AKA went solo with songs like “Do It” and “Mistakes,” the former made it to the number one of top 40 on the South African 5fm. AKA continued to make good music and in 2015 his Sophomore album was certified gold, by the recording artistes of South Africa. In May 2016, it was certified platinum by RISA. The rapper’s nominated song “The World Is Yours” is a victory lap that consists of brilliant words and pictures.


The  Fresh and famous Emtee is a nominee in this category for his song “We Up.” The rapper and record producer had desired a life on Hip-hop scene since his first-grade primary school. In 2010, Emtee made his mark in the music industry after he recorded and released his track “Roll Up” produced by Ruff, which received major play in Southern Africa, and he had Nigerian’s singer “Wizkid” and South African’s rapper AKA on its remix. Emtee’s nominated track “We Up” is an inspiring hit track from a fresh perspective.


Hip-hop Artist Octopizzo from Kenya is also a nominee for his latest hit track “TBT.” Having developed listening and looking up to hip-hop legends like 2pac, Jay Z and Eminem. Octopizzo perfected his aptitude for rapping, and at the commencement of his career dominated the freestyle world, emerging as the winner of various freestyle competitions. In 2008 his mix tape “S.O.N” was the bestselling in Kenyan Hip-hop history. Octopizzo recorded mostly in his dialect you still perceive the expertise in his flows.

Nasty C

South Africa’s latest Hip-hop celebrity Nasty C was nominated for his song “Down south” featuring Seyi shay and Ma E.  Born in Durban, KwaZulu Natal, in South Africa and having been influenced by his elder brother who was a music producer then, Nasty C at the age of 9 began rapping and soon mastered the art of music production. He grew looking up to music artistes like AKA, Kulu Chann, and Reason and later went on to perform alongside AKA at a Durban Festival. The rapper, record producer and songwriter has worked with international music stars like French Montana, Davido, and Casper Nyovest.  His nominated song  “Down South”  is an ingenious track with clever rhymes and rhythms.

The 2017 AFRIMA will hold from November 10 to 12. The scheduled events are The Africa Music Business Roundtable on Friday, November 10 at the Ballroom, Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos by 9:30AM; attendance is subject to registration on the AFRIMA website,

Other main events are the AFRIMA Music Village, an evening of a non-stop open music festival of live performances from the African stars and nominees, with an expected audience of 40,000 people, on Friday November 10, at the Waterfront, Bar Beach, Victoria Island, Lagos by 6PM. Attendance will be activated by the purchase of the AFRIMA 2017 Tee-Shirts on the AFRIMA website and at designated points.

The Main Awards Ceremony (November 12, 4PM Red Carpet, 7:30 Awards Live); a world-class event will happen at the Convention Centre, Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos. There will be live performances from star-studded artistes and television broadcast to 84 countries on 109 television stations around the world.
