Hip-Hop Giants in Africa

Africa, a continent that owns diverse music genres and glows with them, has become a giant in the world of hip-hop, breeding stars with different styles that shine globally.

Africans have been given the opportunity to affirm which hip-hop artist have proven their worth amongst the paramount Hip-hop artists nominated for the 5th All African Music Awards, AFRIMA for Best Artiste or Group in African Hip-Hop.

The nominees for Best Artiste or Group in African Hip-Hop are:

Black M – Black Mesrimes or Black M, is a French rapper and singer-songwriter. He is famous for his membership in the French rap and hip hop collective (Sexion of Assault) in his work and collaborations with various artists. Black M is from Guinea.

Cassper Nyovest – Cassper Nyovest, is a South African recording artist and record producer. His debut album Tsholofelo was released on 18 July 2014. He is currently signed to his own independent label and media company, Family Tree. He continues to thrill Africa with high quality music.

Falz – Falz is a Nigerian rapper, actor, and songwriter. He began his career while in secondary school after forming a group called “The School Boys” with his friend before his professional career as a music artist began in 2009. He currently owns an independent record label called Bahd Guys Records.

Khaligraph Jones – Khaligraph Jones is a Kenyan hip hop artiste. The talented rapper who fell in love with music at a very young age is known for his lyrical prowess that has endeared him to many Hip hop lovers in the country.  Khaligraph Jones is currently signed to Spincycle Entertainment.

Kwesta – Kwesta, is a South African rapper and songwriter. Kwesta’s musical talent began as an interest in poetry which brought him very positive feedback that encouraged him to move forward to perform at talent shows. He then came to the realization that he had a talent for performing spoken word. He is currently signed to his own Independent and media company known as Rap Lyf with co-founder Kid X.

M.anifest – M.anifest is a Ghanaian rapper, singer and songwriter. He released his first solo album, Manifestations, in 2007 funded by royalties he received from lending his voice to a Pepsi jingle that played nationally on U.S radio. In his time in the Twin Cities, M.anifest learnt to adopt the do-it-yourself credo and the know-how in becoming an independent musician.

MHD – MHD, is a French rapper from Paris, his father is a Guinean from Jakhanke origin coming from Boké, west Guinea and his mother a Senegalese residing in Guinea. His music is the precursor of “Afro Trap”, a mixture of African music and trap music.

Muslim – Mohamed Mezouri, known as “Muslim” a Moroccan rapper and songwriter, is known for rapping about the real life issues facing the youth. The Tangier native’s rhymes encourage young people to cling to hope and self-confidence, even in the face of difficulties.

Nadia Nakai – Nadia Nakai Kandava, is a South African artiste5  with a trace of Zimbabwean descent. She released her first official single “Like Me” in 2013 and broke out in 2014 after being featured on the remix of the Riky Rick song “Amantombazane.”

Shane Eagle– Shane Eagle, is a South African rapper. The rapper released his debut album “Yellow” on the 31st August 2017. He released music videos for “Let It Flow” and “Need Me” on the 31st August 2017 when the album was available on all digital platforms.

Shane Eagle- 5th AFRIMA

Sofiane – Sofiane, is a French rapper with Algerian Origin. He is also known by the name Fianso. In 2011, he released independently the album Blacklist followed by Blacklist II in 2013. A big fan of punchlines, his determination makes him an artist in constant evolution.
